About this deal

It’s an incredibly pragmatic and level-headed analysis of the political duopoly, one that has dominated the country for decades. He breaks down the rotten situation consuming the working class then proceeds to lay out how we reached this point. My dole has always seemed generous because, because of my education, I can live well within my means.

It created a system of Bucket Schools for the working class, albeit with better teachers than the untrained schoolmasters of the élite establishments, but with a built-in sense of failure. Seems that having a few strong opinions it's hard to no let these boil off (re: Loki's Daily Record farewell article Feb'22). It’s a large collection of perspectives placed alongside McGarvey’s own commentary which comprises history, society and political leanings. If proximity to a problem makes us better placed to understand how to address it, then it’s no wonder we are faltering. I've seen first hand the effects that Darren discusses in his book, not least due to living in similar communities but also in working in the homelessness sector in Scotlands biggest city.I also found it interesting that the majority of his anecdotes and interviews with people experiencing the problems faced in the UK were young men (or at least the ones he described in enough detail to stick in my memory). The poor cannot, because the system does not think it worth-while to teach them how to economise, does not teach them simple logic - teaches them nothing. He tells Adam Rutherford it’s time for a meaningful discussion in which the voiceless and powerless get heard.

He absolutely hits the nail on the head with this commentary and explains valuable and thought provoking concepts in an incredibly real and expressive manner. If you’re expecting a raging takedown of one political party over another, the author asks that you put your factionalism aside.
