About this deal

Passionate about parenting and our community, OC Mom Collective strives to connect area moms to relevant resources, local businesses, can’t-miss happenings, and most of all — each other! I admit I literally sweated a bit during this stage, until I realized that no one was going to see a slightly crooked or rumpled seam. My plan was to knit a brown hat and then make buns of felt … but instead I’ll make these and attach them to the hat!

With right sides together pin the lining to the dress around the neck hole and key hole slit you cut. I repeated the process of laying down strips of fabric tape to one side of the sleeve (this time in longer pieces, like a few inches at a time) so that one side was entirely lined with tape. Using a 1/2 inch seam allowance (for all parts of the dress) start at the end of the sleeve and follow under the arm and down to the knee where you want the slit to start. I laid down on the sheet, placing my head over the neck hole, and stretched one arm out to the side. I used her belt as my inspiration for this belt but I actually printed off a pattern for the silver medallions from Craftiness is not Optionalbecause they perfectly fit my belt pattern!Cut a piece of fusible interfacing if you want it stiffened up but my daughter said it felt better softer so we didn't use it.

we had already started our daughter’s leia costume and was looking for some ideas for the belt and hair. You don’t have to be super careful about cutting on a straight line here as the rough edges will eventually be hidden in the seam.I didn’t plan to make a proper hem for the neck, and luckily I didn’t need to since I was able to carefully cut a clean line. Fold your fabric the same way you folded the sheet and then pin your sheet pattern on top of the fabric.

Going with my philosophy of not sweating the small stuff too much in making this costume, I decided it’d take me less time to cut the bottom carefully, than hem it up with tape. It’s great for sewing on trims and such, but I used it to keep my little “medallions” in place while I sewed them on, since pins would leave holes in this material. I carefully folded up a quarter inch of the rough cut edge and patted the open side of the tape to it. Last week a friend loaned me an Ewok costume for Charlotte, and with A LOT of convincing, we got Sadie on board with being Princess Leia. And standing next to three other people dressed up as Star Wars characters, no one mistook me for anyone other than Princess Leia. Then, after folding in about an inch of the edge of the other side of the sleeve (enough to cover all the sticky tape inside the hem) and holding that in one hand, I carefully peeled the paper off the fabric tape and pressed the two sides together. I used this pattern, and lengthened the sleeves, then cut the end off at an angle after she tried it on. The hood has beautiful drape in the back when down and is like a parachute of sorts when on the head. In retrospect, I could’ve wet my hair to keep the fly-aways from sticking out, or used bobby pins to get the buns to sit against the sides of my head.

I can’t wait till my twins grow a little older and I can talk them into dressing as Luke and Leia ;). I then folded the sheet down the middle and cut the other side to match, so that both lengths were equidistant from the head. Imagine my delight when I was looking for Princess Leia costume tutorials and found a good one on one of my favorite blogs! Push sleeves of the lining into dress sleeves and tack the lining to the dress at shoulder and underarm seams if you wish. It doesn’t matter if the seam here gets a little messed up, so long as the sleeve is entirely attached.old silver ribbon just long enough to comfortably fit around your waist (I have tons of random pieces of ribbons in my wrapping paper box, but if you don’t, just ask around. I felt great, was super comfortable, and got a ton of compliments on my DIY No Sew Easy Princess Leia costume. Once all the seams were taped, I put the costume back on and paraded proudly around the house in it.
