About this deal

Enlarged and cropped, the photographs reveal the built environment and life within it in great detail. It's quite interesting to realize that London was, in the mid 1800s, almost on the brink of collapse, thanks to poverty and disease and just too many bloody people.

The piece invites participants to question their routine journeys and examine their surroundings, the starting point being disused tube stations. Some of the physical impacts of these profound changes can be seen in these photographs - the arrival of tramlines, the progressive replacement of horse-drawn vehicles by motor cars,. Lost London is a collection of incredible photos of London taken between 1870 and 1945, which all come from an archive held by English Heritage. We suggest you also carry additional proof of identity and contact the helpline to replace your pass immediately.

On the north side of Westminster Bridge (by the way, London’s second bridge, opposed at its construction by City chauvinists) the Opera House began construction during the 1870s. Even after the war, buildings that could have been refurbished were knocked down to make way for new housing that would aim to eradicate the terrible poverty that had characterised large swathes of London for decades. It got to roof level, complete with passages to parliament and to the Tube station, before the money ran out and most of it was demolished. The idea is incredibly bold and well executed with some aspects of the film working very well, others less so.
