About this deal

For another, I think that the ending of the special with its allusions to Jonathan’s past and his history with his brother, rather than providing closure, seems to open up new possibilities.

A man who investigates 'supernatural' occurrences kills himself by crashing his boat after receiving a fax from his lover. There is a legend that a hundred years ago a sorcerer named Jacob Surtees was able to open a fiery portal and throw his victims into it using telekinesis. I’m just sayin’, that is a lot of books to choose from… Second, due to Polly’s interference, we are 40 minutes into this 90 minute episode before Jonathan hears of this woman’s problems and gets to the scene of the crime (and even then it’s a scarecrow competition that enables this…just don’t even ask). There is also a strong sense that the show is consciously alluding to its past throughout the episode. Alison having been knocked out finds herself in the rumoured underground dungeon and is forced to watch Stephen levitated across the room and into the fire.Clever, yes, but complete bullshit that the method Jonathan uncovers in anyway proves the husband’s innocence.

Creek seems out of place and uncomfortable in his role as husband to a wealthy, upwardly mobile woman, who seems to have all the character of a boiled egg and serves simply to antagonise, thwart, and put down her husband's former lifestyle. His third, surviving, daughter Alison is now an adult and found herself summoned to see Clore just before his death. However, when she publishes her autobiography, her cosmetic surgeon and ex-lover is outraged by what she says about him and threatens to sue her. I’ll bet the Thrupenny Bit from my Christmas pud that David Renwick has, at some point, seen the utterly terrible ‘tits n’ gore’ Italian horror film, Bloody Pit of Horror. Or perhaps his wife Polly, and her understandable aversion to hideous deaths, will persuade him to pass up the challenge - especially as there's already a psychopathic killer on her husband's trail, with a score to settle. He also married Polly, unanimously derided as a complete non-event of a character whose sole role seemed to be preventing her husband from sleuthing. As the mystery deepens with the kidnapping of the magician's partner, Creek's powers of deduction seem to pale beside the raw intuition of his "collaborator". Despite this death knell hanging over Renwick’s second best creation ( the first being well and truly buried), a three part 2014 mini-series was commissioned, but again disappointed many fans as the strange character restyling continued to the detriment of the actual puzzle solving. An illusionist, whose twin sister died when an escape trick went wrong and she was partially sliced in half, is found dead in her snow-covered garden after her husband witnessed her shooting herself. I feel that I could make a more generalized version of that comment to sum up my feelings about this story overall.

Next, the striped unicorn affair, or as Creek’s wife Polly (Sarah Alexander) mishears it “the striped eunuch on a ferry”.

Jonathan sets out to find Tracy and discover whether Roy is telling the truth or not, but what connection does Tracy's disappearance have with the Creed of Eden, an Earth-loving cult that Roy is a member of?
