About this deal

An investigation which leads her not only to a menacing Manchester crime boss, but to the drug-running gangs of a nearby sink estate. The narrators accents were truly awful, actually embarrassing and very very annoying, to the point they detracted from the story as I was bracing myself for the next onslaught for my ears, without the attempt at accent the narration was great. Showboat Medical Examiner Margot Heavner makes it clear that, breaking with her department’s earlier practice ( The Bone Collection, 2016, etc. This reads as an honest and authentic portrayal of London gang life in a world where the truth is hard to find. Best known for his Tom Thorne series, Billingham has done an excellent job in his first standalone work.

Although not thrilled with the idea, Theo does as asked, with the result being that the car swerves and crashes into a bus stop and kills Paul Hopwood. She retraces his footsteps and discovers unsettling connections between Paul and Frank Linnell, a powerful player in the shadowy London underworld with his own reasons for unraveling Paul's death. Not least of all because of the surprising appearance of Peep Show’s Super Hans himself, Matt King, as a dapper and flamboyant pathologist. It's a character we haven't heard about, he hasn't been mentioned and this is the first scene he's appearing in. The result is disaster for another unlikely family: DS Paul Hopwood and his girlfriend Helen Weeks, who’s carrying a baby that may or may not be his.The details of what really happened in the prologue are revealed bit by bit and each new revelation is more shocking than the previous. Mark Billingham has (I hope temporarily) set aside his compelling series featuring Detective Inspector Tom Thorne and given us instead In The Dark, a stunning novel demonstrating an even greater mastery of his craft. However, the real difference is that the author makes the reader care about the main characters in the book.

I am very excited by what the BBC has done, I think it is going to be a great show and MyAnna Buring is fantastic as Helen Weeks. As she tries to reconcile the facts of her loss with her own doubts, Helen digs deeper into Manchester's criminal underworld, only to be hit with a betrayal she never saw coming.Gritty, fierce, and moving, here is a must-read for anyone who likes their crime fiction unflinching—and unforgettable.
