About this deal

Following the battle the Legion travel to the Isstvan system, ostensibly to crush a rebellion by the people of Isstvan III. The death of Garro’s colleague as he clings to a Dreadnought is another moment that is not a major narrative point but places a personal emphasis on the disaster unfolding. Ordinarily the hero would be a cypher, ultimately doomed to die and serving little purpose except to drive the arc forward.

Treachery, intrigue and salvation all bottled up into a couple hundred pages of pacey action, reaction and revelation in the gothic sci-fi cosmos of Warhammer 40K. That headline rating does actually mask a little nuance because a bit like False Gods (which I also gave five stars) this was slow to get going, the effort of catching up to where we left proceedings at Isstvan III while we examined the buildup to the betrayal from the perspective of the Death Guard a little hard going at points. I found that the writing style lived up to or exceeded the other novels in this series and Swallow really redeemed himself from the Blood Angels books. The Flight of the Eisenstein is a novel by James Swallow and the fourth book in The Horus Heresy series. A nice look in particular with the whole “old” concept was looking at Space Marines who were so old that they couldn’t fight any longer.Euphrati Keeler has the rest of her sharp edges shaved off so she can be a vehicle for a wider religious movement but I think it's fine, and it provides a link to Garro’s motivations and decision-marking. Brilliantly written and very engaging, I really enjoyed the inter-play between Garro and his command squad – not to mention the Sisters of Silence.

Of course I understand that the point is to distinguish the marines from the men, but it still comes across as very stilted and clumsy. You're not going to cover much of the same ground at all, so don't worry about a retelling, you will occasionally see a familiar face but this is an entirely new story.

Can Garro and his men survive the depredations of Chaos and get his warning to the Emperor before Horus's plans reach fruition? When Garro is rescued, Rogal Dorn’s rage and denial of Horus' uprising initially caught me off guard, as it might for someone in Garro’s desperate state pleading for help, but it then evolves in a natural way. Lord Commander Eidolon uses an illegal alien organ grafted to his throat by Fabius Bile to kill the Warsinger with a sonic scream.

Running throughout the sequence of the 'flight' and its immediate aftermath is also a fabulous sense of the perils of the warp, which put me in mind of the way the ocean was seen by ancient sailors; respected, feared, capricious and inherently unknowable. During the secret build-up to the Horus Heresy, the Death Guard Legion battle the alien Jorgall in their bottle-ships.You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Unfortunately for him, to reach Terra, "Eisenstein" must pass trough the warp and there the foulest of the Chaos Gods will rise unspeakable monsters against him. This was excellent and the narration, whilst a little jarring at first after Toby Longworth, just got better and better. I found it difficult to keep track of (and thus, to be invested in) a number of his characters, perhaps because of Swallow's habit of referring to them by both first and last name throughout the narrative.

For newcomers to the 40k universe, the Heresy novels are set - much like the Clone Wars - in the build-up to the most pivotal moment of the saga. Was als Einführung für den Leser eher verhalten und langsam beginnt, steigert sich zu rasanten Handlungssequenzen, in denen die Zeichnung des Charakters von Garro nicht zu kurz kommt. The Eisenstein prepares to jump to the Warp but this is noticed by the Terminus Est, ship of Death Guard First Captain Calas Typhon who is one of the traitor leaders.
