About this deal

Thus that player (only) knows what resources are present in a territory and whether it is worth building a city there. Since the military units were all the same color (and distinguished with a flag bearer in the same region as the military units) it is difficult to see what units are yours and where you have the strategic advantage.

After starting his career writing about music, films and video games for various places, Matt spent many years as a technology, PC and video game journalist before writing about tabletop games as the editor of Tabletop Gaming magazine. Before each of the first player’s turns, the first player advances the event dial, possibly producing one of these events. In Civilization: The Board Game, players take on one of six different civilizations ( Americans, Chinese, Egyptians, Germans, Romans and Russians). Perhaps its comparative obscurity is in part because Tresham, unlike Meier, kept his name off the box, leaving the generic mononym.

This nicely keeps the game from becomming stale, because you never know where the "good stuff" is to be found from game to game, but also heralds one major flaw with the game - the total randomness of the resource allocation can be problematic.

After this, each of the players is able to move their various markers representing the locations of their military and their scouts. This review will consider the Eagle Games version of Civilisation, and will not attempt to compare it to the older boardgame (mostly beause I have never seen it). Players organize their focus areas by constructing a focus bar at the beginning of the game, which is placed beneath each player’s leader card. Each player takes control of a nation with the goal of building the most advanced society in the known world. I have played enough games to realize that this is the aberration and not the norm, but it was still excruciatingly annoying. Certain spaces on the map contain huts and villages, which represent passive and aggressive barbarians, which grant resources on discovery. A match of Clash of Cultures will still take you several hours to finish in full, but it doesn’t drag on or become bogged down in tiresome rule-checking.
