All You Ever Wanted
About this deal
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. A big thing that stood out for me throughout the start of this book was just how perfectly crafted the many relationships are between different characters, and especially the relationship Emily has with herself. In the second part of the novel the narrative switches and the reader starts to realise exactly who Anna was and the lengths she was prepared to go to so she could get what she wanted. I absolutely love Susan Elliot Wright's novels and so was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this advance copy. Before turning to fiction, she worked in journalism, writing hundreds of features for women’s magazines, and 10 non-fiction books on health-related topics.
My previous novels have been published to glowing reviews, translated into many languages and have ranked in the Nielsen bestseller chart. An excellent story, told with empathy and understanding about issues that are often not talked about. I was hooked from the first few pages, a great easy holiday read, I loved the change of narrator it was unexpected and actually needed. There is always something for the reader to think about, the urgency building as we sense something isn’t right. With her taut writing and immaculate pacing, Susan Elliot Wright has created a dark and sinister tale of toxic family relationships, full of secrets and lies, layered with a perfect example of the smothering isolation felt by so many new mothers. Anna's life has been one of struggle, rejection and loneliness whereas Emily seems to have a dream life and it does encourage you to question whether you should feel sympathy for her or whether she is ungrateful. The plot was fairly predictable from early on (no spoilers but it’s about family ties, separation and how lives diverge).
Yes there was a criminal element but this was more about the characters, the small family whose lives are disrupted by Anna. Her powerful contemporary novels about women’s lives have been published in many languages, shortlisted for prizes, and rank high in the Nielsen bestseller chart. This is an unusual thriller in that you are aware that things could take a sinister turn, but everything seems ok on the surface.
