In a recent game, I had a spread of planets, sort of in two arms, stretching from my Homeworld to the perimeter of my local space with minerals nicely distributed around the Homeworld and along my planetary lines; that allowed me to smoothly and rapidly develop. I can't see how it will finish in anything less than six hours, even by knowledgeable, dedicated players.
You will, of course, build ships to destroy, but no one will ever know what you are building, and in what quantity. A unit that has an Attack Strength (a 'combat-capable' unit) may not enter a space containing a face-down system marker (i.In 2011, Strategy First released a RPG board game named Space Empires: 4X, based on the digital model of the Space Empires computer games, utilizing sprites and mechanics from Space Empires IV. If you pass the check, the ship can stay in the hex, or can continue with Movement, and will not be forced to make a survival check at the beginning of the next turn. The “gang up on the leader” problem can be solved by doing a 4 player game where the diagonal (or adjacent) players are allied! Looking at both players’ Technology levels, it appears that Blue has gone for quantity, while Yellow has opted for quality. The game encourages the loser to give up if they know they are losing, and doesn’t highlight the need to make them suffer if they know things are going poorly.
Each player will be given a Homeworld (mine happens to be Chulak as I love the color green) along with their starting ships and infrastructure, including 4 Shipyards, 3 Colony Ships, 1 Miner and 3 Scouts. Since the Damage markers have no effect on units, Blue’s values will be identical to the first roll. Unless stated differently, each player begins with a fully developed home plane, 3 Colony Ships, one Miner, 4 Ship Yards and 3 Scouts located there.
Purchase Limits: You may not build ships if all group counters of that ship type are already in play (unless you Scuttle ships to reuse the counter).
