Mysteries of Thorn Manor
About this deal
With no access to the outside world, Elisabeth and Nathaniel have to work together to discover the source of the magic before they're due to host the city's Midwinter Ball. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. You’re brave, strong, an unstoppable force for good—which I admire even though it’s very inconvenient for me personally—and you drive me mad with lust, especially when you’re stomping around in that giant suit of armour. The entirety of this novella takes place at Thorn Manor, but that doesn't make the story feel small. It felt so genuine, like looking into a real, breathing romance between two goofy best friends, and I adored it.
But something strange is afoot at Thorn Manor: the estate’s wards, which are meant to keep their home safe, are acting up and forcibly trapping the Manor’s occupants inside. My darling characters are as cute as I remember, with such a fun relationship and so much love for one another, and every sentence involving my baby Silas filled me with joy. This novella is set a few months after the end of Sorcery of Thorns and we are once again following Elisabeth and Nathaniel as they settle into their new lives with each other. Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. Throwing a temper tantrum, it traps its occupants with no indication as to what's disturbed the wards.
Margaret has a way of writing my very favorite heroines, and Elisabeth, with all of her spunk and bravery and protective nature, is by far one of my most cherished fictional characters of all. I'm a huge fan of stories that bring you closer to beloved characters; Mysteries expands so much on the characters' emotions and arcs that you come away adoring them even more. Regardless, this one had all the feels, all the swoons, and was essentially like being wrapped in a warm hug with a cup of your favorite warm beverage by a roaring fire. I remember loving it despite not really liking Margaret Rogerson’s debut, so I was excited to hear that she was coming out with a sequel novella.
She was having the complicated realization that she still wanted to kiss Nathaniel even while he was wearing an old lady’s hideous dressing gown. He’s the source of many moments that had me smiling and even laughing, and my love for him has only grown through reading this. I hope we do get some sort of companion novels about new characters taking place in this same world someday. I already love Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas, but I didn't realize how plot-heavy the first book was until Mysteries answered so many character questions that Sorcery didn't leave time for. But it has also made me want to re-read Sorcery of Thorns before doing that but maybe I’m too impatient for that, lol.
and how much she cares for Silas and Mercy, unfazed by the fact that he is a literal demon and she is a servant girl that most would never look at twice. This is a book I’m going to reach for time and time again when the world feels like too much and I need to be wrapped in a cozy hug by these pages. cw/tw: blood depiction, harm to get blood for magic, grief + trauma depictions, extreme nightmares, loss of a loved on in the past, talk of murders/death. i think readers who are nostalgic for all the feelings ‘a sorcery of thorns’ gave and were wanting an extended epilogue will really enjoy this short story! I did get the impression that there might be more to his story than we already know, that maybe there's another novel or novella coming our way at some point, but I admit it might just be wishful thinking on my part.
Mysteries of Thorn Manor' is the follow-up novella to 'Sorcery of Thorns' and while I realize I've spoiled a bit of book one for myself, admittedly I'm even more eager to read it than I. Also Elisabeth seems to carry Demonslayer around with her almost everywhere she goes, and I simply think that more characters should have emotional support swords like she does. Even though she knew this was a ridiculous thing to think, she felt as though kissing were something they had discovered—a marvelous secret that only they knew, and were inventing as they went along. but it was so enjoyable to be back in the world of thorn manor and see elisabeth, nathaniel, and silas again. With no access to the outside world, Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas—along with their new maid Mercy—will have to work together to discover the source of the magic behind the malfunctioning wards before they’re due to host the city’s Midwinter Ball.
