Alice in Wonderland [DVD]
About this deal
Tim Burton and Disney join forces for this 3D fantasy adventure based on the characters from the Lewis Carroll classics 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass'. The film is set 19 years after Alice's first trip to Underland, and Burton makes use of this fact very cleverly throughout the film. In this animated Disney version of Lewis Carroll's stories, young Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) is transported to the bizarre Wonderland after following the March Hare (Jerry Colonna) down a rabbit hole. Alice, now 19 years old, follows a rabbit in a blue coat to a magical wonderland from her dreams where she is reunited with her friends who make her realise her true destiny. The Mad Tea Party, the Queen of Hearts' Croquet Game, and Alice's encounters with the Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat fuse the spirit of Carroll's words, the vitality of the polished animation, and the stylized look and brilliant palette of designer Mary Blair.
FILM ONLY* Alice in Wonderland is an amazing film, effortlessly fusing brilliant visuals, fantastic acting (particularly in the form of Johnny Depp) and an engaging plot. When Alice (Charlotte Henry) steps through a mirror, she finds herself in an enchanted land where - among many other colourful characters and experiences - chess pieces come to life, a hookah-smoking caterpillar shows her how to change sizes by eating pieces of mushroom, a baby changes into a pig and a Cheshire Cat dissolves into thin air.Much has been made of the caterpillar with the hookah, not without some justification, one feels, and likewise the Cheshire Cat - all very surreal and distant. This film is one of the most mature and thoughtful of all Disney films, and manages to capture some of the dreamy, frightening, enchanting and nightmarish atmosphere of the books. She chases him and falls into the magical madcap world of Wonderland with its kaleidoscope of off-the-wall characters.
Alice in Wonderland didn't have that effect at all, rather I was completely immersed from the first minute to the last, with the staging and characters feeling entirely real.

Though a variation to the original Alice in Wonderland plot you will certainly agree that this is a place like no place on earth. As the script includes a lot of pure nonsense and often it's not possible to predict what the conversation is about or the actual made-up terms are spelled, it is very difficult to follow without subtitles.Character Animation: Hal King, Judge Whitaker, Hal Ambro, Phil Duncan, Bob Carlson, Don Lusk, Cliff Nordberg, Harvey Toombs, Fred Moore, Marvin Woodward, Hugh Fraser, Charles A.
